The Friends of the Library

Support the Library: become a Friend

The Friends of Lambeth Palace Library have been helping the Library to flourish for more than 60 years. We give grants to the Library to support: the acquisition of books, manuscripts and archives; cataloguing, conservation and digitisation of the collections; and exhibitions, education and research.

As a Friend you will enjoy invitations to lectures and curator talks, behind the scenes tours of the Library and its conservation studio, exhibition previews, and events in the Library and Lambeth Palace as well as a complimentary copy of the Library’s illustrated Annual Review. We hold our AGM in the Library with a lecture by a guest speaker and an opportunity to meet Library staff and Friends over afternoon tea.

In 2026 the existing Friends organisation and the Library Trust were dissolved and their assets transferred to a new charity called the Lambeth Palace Library Development Trust and Friends CIO (Registered Charity No. 1214015), which continues the work of both charities in support of the Library.

The Friends help the Library to develop its world-class collections and make them accessible to everyone. Over the years we have given funds to the Library to acquire many treasures, including the first prayer book of Queen Elizabeth I and an important group of documents removed from Archbishop Laud’s study after his arrest in 1640. Your support will ensure that the Library’s collections can continue to develop.

We are keen to expand the Friends so we can give even more support to the Library and we warmly welcome new members.

A legacy to the Friends will enable us to help the Library even more through providing additional funding for acquisitions, conservation, exhibitions, education or research; you can specify in your will how you wish your legacy to be used. Many Friends are already planning to help in this way, and we are very grateful to you all.
