Music in Services

Books to guide religious rites and devotions often contain musical settings of elements of the Mass or Offices. Most music in service books is found as plainchant with a single melodic line. As well as examples of chant notation, this display also features a choirbook and a partbook, illustrative of works that contain more elaborate settings of Mass liturgy, canticles, and hymns for the use of larger groups of singers together in harmony.
