Hymns and Songs of the Church

Hymns—songs of praise and devotion—have been a part of Christian worship from its earliest days. Though inspired by scriptural teaching, hymns generally do not exactly quote scripture, but are instead poems on religious themes. The notable exceptions to this definition are the Psalms, 150 poems included in Old Testament scripture which have always been associated with music.
This section displays hymns from the medieval through to the modern and shows several hymns that have been in use for centuries as well as some that had far more limited or unique usage.
