CANCELLED: David Skinner on ‘The ‘Arundel’ Choirbook (Lambeth MS 1): a 16th-century journey from West Sussex to Lambeth’

13/09/2023 at 17:30 19:00

This lecture has been cancelled until further notice, the Exhibition space will still be open to visitors 17:30-19:00 who would like to speak to the curator, Mary Clayton-Kastenholz.

Lambeth MS1 is a very rare musical survival from early Tudor England, and is one of only two ecclesiastical choirbooks to have come down to us intact from the reign of Henry VIII. Its content is dominated by the music of Robert Fayrfax (d. 1521) and Nicholas Ludford (d. 1557), who represent two distinct generations of early English composers. The complex story of how the choirbook might have ended up in Lambeth Palace Library is discussed, as well as the nature of pre-Reformation musical sources, its singers, and the institutions which fostered them.

The talk will last 45 minutes with a Q & A at the end, finishing around 6:30pm.
