Dr Kathleen Kennedy: Archbishops and the Wycliffite Bible
October 16 at 17:30 – 19:00
The Wycliffite Bible is famous (or infamous) for being illegal, and leading to the martyrdoms of Lollards for over a hundred years. Why, then, do so many copies exist today? Why are so many of them beautifully illuminated? In this talk, we will discover the answers to these questions. We will even explore how some Wycliffite Bibles were made by the same artisans that the archbishops themselves commissioned. Join us as we bust some myths, and learn more about the Wycliffite Bibles preserved in Lambeth Palace Library.
Kathleen E. Kennedy is a British Academy Global Professor at the University of Bristol. An expert in late medieval English manuscripts and early printed books, Kennedy considers these artifacts not only as texts, but also as vital clues to the material culture of their era.
All are welcome, but those wishing to attend must book a ticket via Eventbrite or email archives@churchofengland.org no later than Tuesday 15 October. Please note that we are operating a waiting list.
