From its earliest days, Christian worship has included songs of praise and devotion. Hymns, often present in services but not part of the liturgy proper, are poems on religious themes inspired by scriptural teaching. Some of the texts and tunes in this case are recognisable from their use in services today, despite being displayed here in medieval manuscripts and early printed books. The Psalms, 150 poems found in the Old Testament, have always been associated with music and regularly appear alongside hymns.
Many Protestant denominations share a passion for the singing and composition of hymns. Several Protestant leaders, including Martin Luther (Lutheranism), Matthew Parker (the Church of England), and John Wesley (Methodism), composed hymns or put psalms to music.
