DESCRIPTION:Join us for this guest lecture by Andrew Foster held in partnership with the the Institute of Historical Research\, given at Lambeth and open to all. \n\n\n\nFor the redoubtable Dr Mary Hobbs (1923–1998)\, the return of Bishop Henry King’s Library marked the rebirth of Chichester Cathedral Library post 1671; yet close analysis of The Old Catalogue before 1735 reveals other stories of benefactors and books in what was quite a renaissance for cathedral\, city\, and the surrounding region at the end of the seventeenth century. \n\n\n\nThis is an opportunity to hear a paper delivered earlier in the year for the History of Libraries seminar when attendance was badly affected by train strikes. \n\n\n\nAll are welcome but those wishing to attend should book a ticket via Eventbrite or email archives@churchofengland.org no later than 6 December.

SUMMARY:Julia King: Remember the Scrybeler: Syon Abbey’s Books at Lambeth Palace Library
DESCRIPTION:Syon Abbey was England’s first and only Birgittine abbey\, founded by Henry V in 1415. By the time of the Dissolution\, it had become one of the richest monastic houses in England. The Abbey was a double house of men and women\, but the women’s community was far larger and\, during its existence\, the Abbey was headed exclusively by Abbesses. \n\n\n\nThe Birgittine order followed by the inhabitants of Syon Abbey forbade any material possessions other than books. Under the guidance of its several abbesses\, this exception led to the development of one of the largest libraries in England\, and a community where reading and piety were intertwined throughout daily life. In her lecture\, Julia King will comment on the cultures of women’s reading and writing that flourished at the Abbey\, using evidence from books in Lambeth Palace Library’s collections. \n\n\n\nAll are welcome\, but those wishing to attend should book a free ticket via Eventbrite or email archives@churchofengland.org no later than Tuesday 22 October. \n\n\n\nPlease note that tickets must be booked individually for security purposes.

SUMMARY:Dr Kathleen Kennedy: Archbishops and the Wycliffite Bible
DESCRIPTION:The Wycliffite Bible is famous (or infamous) for being illegal\, and leading to the martyrdoms of Lollards for over a hundred years. Why\, then\, do so many copies exist today? Why are so many of them beautifully illuminated? In this talk\, we will discover the answers to these questions. We will even explore how some Wycliffite Bibles were made by the same artisans that the archbishops themselves commissioned. Join us as we bust some myths\, and learn more about the Wycliffite Bibles preserved in Lambeth Palace Library. \n\n\n\nKathleen E. Kennedy is a British Academy Global Professor at the University of Bristol. DESCRIPTION:The term refugees was first used to describe the 50\,000 Protestants who fled to England from France in the 16th-18th centuries. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion with Jim Hendler\, a pioneer in the field of artificial intelligence and a leading voice in the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and archives. With Pip Willcox\, Head of Lambeth Palace Library\, he will describe his recent work with generative AI and the archive of Emily Roebling\, and the possibilities for AI to enhance our understanding of history and the accessibility of archives. He will touch on the current relationship between AI and archives\, and explore their potential for mutual transformation. \n\n\n\nJim Hendler is the Tetherless World Professor of Computer\, Web\, and Cognitive Sciences at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and Founding Director of the Institute for Data\, Artificial Intelligence\, and Computing. He also directs the RPI-IBM Artificial Intelligence Research Collaboration and serves on the Board of the UK’s charitable Web Science Trust. One of the originators of the Semantic Web\, Professor Hendler has authored over 450 books\, technical papers\, and articles in areas including Open Data\, AI\, and data policy. His most recent book\, co-authored with Dr Alice Mulvehill\, is Social Machines: The coming collision of artificial intelligence\, social networking and humanity. \n\n\n\nHis career includes roles such as the former Chief Scientist of the Information Systems Office at the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)\, adviser on the US government’s data.gov open data website\, and Open Data Advisor to New York State. SUMMARY:Charlie Rozier (UEA): Depicting Historical time in Anglo-Norman Manuscripts
DESCRIPTION:This talk will attempt to answer a single\, fundamental question: how does a medieval scribe draw time? Specifically\, it aims to consider how decisions regarding the placement of historical text on the pages of the codex were effective in communicating the passage of historical time to their readers\, according to the purposes of the text. Discussion focuses on examples from a corpus of historical texts and chronicles produced in England c.1100-1200\, which was a key period in the development of English historical writing and thought.  \n\n\n\nA number of manuscript case studies (including key examples from the collections of Lambeth Palace Library) will be used to identify the layers of decisions that scribes took in presenting historical time within the codex\, to highlight the varying ways in which textual layout influenced audience engagement with the progression of historical time. DESCRIPTION:Michael Questier (Durham University): Rome and the Anglicans – and their Histories of the Reformation \n\n\n\n\n\nHistories of the post-Reformation Church of (and in) England are\, as is well known\, often incompatible with each other. Much of the relevant scholarly output of recent times has been taken up with trying to resolve existing contradictory interpretations of what\, exactly\, happened at and after the Reformation. The same ur-texts (Cranmer\, Jewel\, Andrewes et al.) are frequently cited as authorities by those who see the English Church in completely different ways. Likewise\, political narratives that are technically about the same topic often focus on quite different things. It has never been easy to say exactly what we mean by terms such as ‘puritanism’\, ‘Calvinism’\, ‘Laudianism’\, and so on. \n\n\n\nConsensus and agreement are\, frankly\, not expected or likely any time soon. But there have been similar divergences in the narratives compiled by those in the past who wanted to narrate overtly ‘Catholic’ accounts of the Long Reformation. Putting these alongside the better known ‘Anglican’ disagreements on such matters tells one something about both of them. The changes to parish worship and finance during the reign of Edward VI were almost entirely reversed during the reign of Queen Mary. \n\n\n\nPrevious historians have failed to register the crucial disciplinary role played in the parish during this period by Dr John Story\, academic\, theologian and close confidante of Bishop Edmund Bonner. DESCRIPTION:Born in 1500 into the highest circles of the English aristocracy and then lifted as high in the Church\, Reginald Pole’s life was spent steering a perilous course through the storm of the European Reformation. After a brilliant scholarly career in Italy\, he chose refuge there from Henry VIII’s regime and its anti-papal policies. His oppositional stance infuriated the king and led to the execution for treason of Pole’s own mother and brother. Steeped in the theology of martyrdom\, Pole prepared himself for the same fate at the hands of Henry’s assassins. \n\n\n\nPole was made a cardinal in 1536 and later came within one vote of the papal throne. His great period of service in England arrived three decades after he had left\, when in 1553 Mary Tudor appointed him to be archbishop of Canterbury and they began the work of reconciling the English Church to Rome. He died at Lambeth in 1558\, on the same day as the queen\, in the knowledge that the restoration they had begun would not survive the new dispensation. \n\n\n\nPole’s was a life steeped in books. He was a scholar and a collector of one of the period’s most intriguing libraries\, and it was in books that he fought his battles and made his strongest statements for reform. This exhibition gathers books from Oxford\, London\, and Rome to tell his story.
